Bandcamp Friday returns on August 1, from midnight to midnight (Pacific Time). That means Bandcamp waives their revenue share and more of your money goes directly to musicians! So Friday is the day to support artists by buying music and merch on Bandcamp! Here are some of my picks.
Goddess – Goddess This impactful collaboration between Savages’ drummer Fay Milton and ten feminine/non-binary artists is quickly becoming one of my favorites of this year. It’s got a haunting song from Elena Tonra (Ex:Re/Daughter), a dreamy one from Izzy Bee Philips (Black Honey), and commanding tracks from Salvia and Harriet Rock.
Anika – Abyss Driving rock with a hints of grunge mix well with Anika’s English/German accented vocals. Recommended for fans of Flood-produced PJ Harvey.
Deep Sea Diver – BillboardHeartThis indie rock opus swirls. I’m obsessed with the tracks “Let Me Go,” which features Grammy award winner Madison Cunningham, and “What Do I Know.”
Pulp – More Pulp is back with their first album in 24 years and they’re still frisky! Jarvis Cocker and co. have created another brilliant album with a Britpop heart. Make sure you get your tickets to see them on tour this fall. In Boston, they are hitting The Stage at Suffolk Downs on Saturday, September 13.
Lambrini Girls – Who Let the Dogs Out Thrumming punk rock from Brighton, England. How can I not love a band with a song called “Cuntology 101”?
Julian Baker & TORRES – Send a Prayer My WayTunes that tug at the heartstrings with a dash of twang.
Here are some tunes to purchase on this Bandcamp Friday, May 2!
Rain Money Dogs by Miynt
Miynt – Rain Money DogsDreamy, lackadaisical pop from Sweden. Hints of Mazzy Star and Elysian Fields. Pre-order this album that comes out on May 30th and get four tracks now.
Swallow by Steve Queralt
Steve Queralt – SwallowThis is another pre-order recommendation because you don’t want to wait to get the brilliant track “Lonely Town” that features Emma Anderson! Queralt (Ride) and Anderson (Lush/Sing-Sing) join forces on two tracks of his debut solo album.
Choose Myself by Jessica Lea Mayfield
Jessica Lea Mayfield – Choose Myself Mayfield creates some of the saddest music in the world. This five song EP is no exception. I think of Mayfield as a descendant of Lisa Germano. Bonus: Rhett Miller (Old 97’s) appears on Choose Myself. I’m super excited to catch her on tour with Lucero this autumn.
Welcome to My Blue Sky by Momma
Momma – Welcome to My Blue SkyBlissful alternative rock, with touches of shoegaze, from L.A. They’re currently on tour with my next pick …
Planet Popstar by Wishy
Wishy – Planet Popstar These Indianapolis up-and-comers made it onto my Favorite Albums list last year with their debut full-length Triple Seven. When I bought Triple Seven on vinyl at Nice Price Books and Records, both staff members were ecstatic. Wishy makes me hopeful for the future of alternative rock.
Natural by terraplana
terraplana – NaturalThis Brazilian outfit trades in shoegaze, dream pop, and noise pop with aplomb.
Don’t Wanna Know / Rock & Roll Queen by Alex Lahey
Alex Lahey – Don’t Wanna Know / Rock & Roll Queen “Don’t Wanna Know” is a power pop gem that I listen to on repeat. “Rock & Roll Queen” is the cover I didn’t know I needed.
It’s Bandcamp Friday! All proceeds go directly to the artists. Buy some tunes that you streamed on Spotify! (Note: This month’s wrap-up is short because I’ve been wicked sick with pneumonia. But I’m almost all better!)
Fifi Knifefight – I’m Not Mad, Just Disappointed You know how people are like, “Check out my friend’s band!” And you’re like, “Sure!” And then the band is mediocre? That is soooo not the case with Fifi Knifefight! I’m Not Mad, Just Disappointed is a fun, sonic romp.
It’s already Bandcamp Friday again! On Friday, October 4, 2024, Bandcamp waives their revenue share and pass the funds directly onto artists and labels. Here are some tunes I implore you to check out!
Glare – “Mourning Phase” The Texan outfit has released this new single that harkens back to ‘90s dream pop and shoegaze. Catch them next year at the Something In the Way fest at Roadrunner in Boston on February 2.
Wishy – Triple SevenBrazilian illustrator (and my pal!) Luciano introduced me to Wishy based on our common love of Ash. He was right; they sounded excellent! Full of power-pop vim and vigor. And then I realized that I’d be seeing them in February at Something In the Way. Lucky me!
Gillian Welch – Woodland StudiosAnother brilliant album of timeless bluegrass/folk from Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. See them on tour if you can. I was fortunate to work for their label’s distributor eons ago and every time I saw the duo was magical. I’m looking forward to seeing them in New Hampshire in December.
NewDad – Banshee EP Ireland’s NewDad released their debut album, MADRA, in January. This charming, indie pop EP is from 2022. Looking for something to celebrate casting your vote on Election Day? Go see them at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Reminder: check to make sure you’re registered to vote at Vote.org.
Winter Gardens – “Moon Jockey” Britain’s Winter Gardens released this single last year. It sounds like Ladytron and Ladyhawke had a baby and I love it! They also have a smashing brand new single called “U/U.”
Ken Andrews – Secrets of the Lost SatelliteThe lush solo album from the man behind Failure is a must. It’s just been released as a high resolution download.
Year of the Rabbit – Year of the RabbitAnother Ken Andrews selection! This stellar album has also just been released as a high res download and it’s one of my all time favorite albums.
