Pop Culture + Chronic Illness

[Apologies for any incoherent sentences/grammar/spelling. I’m pretty out of it, so I am using voice to text.]

Wow just wow. I was admitted overnight at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for observation. I had multiple seizures.

This stay has been so much better than my stay at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon New Hampshire. There, I felt like I was left to rot. Here, every staff person I have interacted with has treated me with respect.

Rather than just dumping all of my pills on me at 9 PM and 9 AM, they’re giving my meds to me at the directed time. They provide ginger ale, crackers, and even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Even more impressive: they have a pulmonary specialist who administered my allergy and asthma medication. He even gave me water and a cup so that I could rinse my mouth out after I took my inhalers! I just overheard him in another room. He was telling a patient that she needed to rinse after she took inhalers, or she would be at risk for thrush

My room has already been cleaned. A nursing assistant came in with fresh bedding and a new Johnny. She offered to help me bathe once I was more awake.

None of these things happened at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. I was just left there, trapped in the bed. I heard other patients screaming. I heard staff complaining about how short staffed they were. If I moved too much, alarms would go off. I had to buzz (and wait forever) simply to go to ghetto bathrooms. It was traumatizing.

So, thank you to the staff at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center!

Yes! It’s so nice when you have a good experience in a hospital (well, as good as it can be since it is still hospital duh haha) , especially when so many previously have been bad ❤️ xo
