Pop Culture + Chronic Illness

I’ve had a headache since July 27. I feel like my head is in a vice. I was treated for it last week by one of my neurologists with nerve block and trigger point injections. Those triggered multiple seizures. I was then treated in the ER. That treatment gave me a little bit of relief.

The headache is raging today.

Tomorrow, I’m scheduled for an upper endoscopy because my gastrointestinal track (GI) has been messed up since my kneecap replacement/MPFL reconstruction. I got really sick post-op with nausea and vomiting. My GI is regularly pretty screwed up because of having Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. My gastroenterologist said that most people’s GIs are like pipes, but mine is like a garden hose. Add in the 800 mg of gabapentin three times a day for seizures, and I am miserable because it slows down the motility of my GI (motility is the contraction of the muscles that mix and propel contents in the GI track). I’m pretty much bloated all of the time and I have gained 20 pounds since starting the gabapentin.

I’m anxious because, though I’ve had an upper endoscopy in the past, I worry that I’m going to get worse tomorrow. Having any procedure with a headache this bad never goes well for me. And there will be anesthesia used tomorrow. That almost always messes me up. I will be using a scopolamine patch. Fingers crossed that it will help.

Psyduck really is my spirit Pokémon. And if you have any recommendations for getting rid of a cluster headache, please lemme know! Even if you think I may have tried it in the past, I wanna hear it.

So sorry about the headaches and best wishes with the Endoscopy. I had migraines for about 8 years until my wonderful Dentist, Dr. Calvin in Londonderry, NH made me an NTI device since I clench my teeth when I’m sleeping. I have TMJ, the whole bit.
Voila! Migraines gone. If I ever forget the NTI device (little acrylic piece that snaps on 2 front top teeth), I will surely wake up with a headache. I had him make me 2 new NTI devices when I was in NH 2 years ago and I alternate them each week so they’ll last at least a few years. They are a Godsend!

I wear one, too! I have TMJ (just like my dear ole’ dad!) and bruxism. If I fall asleep without my night guard in, the headaches are terrifically bad.
