Pop Culture + Chronic Illness

This week was not a good time to start watching HBO’s Chernobyl. I had a gastric emptying test on Monday and had to eat radioactive eggs. Then they x-rayed me once an hour over a period of five hours.

The test confirmed that I have gastroparesis. It could be from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or my medications. I think it’s a combination of the two. What that means is that my gastrointestinal system isn’t working properly. I’m not digesting food correctly and it’s just staying in my GI system.

I am uncomfortable and my belly is extremely bloated. Additionally, I have acid reflux and vomiting. I have to switch to a low fat/low fiber diet, eating no more than a fistful of food for a meal, eating every two hours, and drinking a protein shake a day. I’m being referred to a nutritionist and I don’t think I’ll be able to eat eggs for a while.

Whoa…I feel it in my bones, collagen has made my system slow…”
